For WAS, I think the right thing to do is to issue a certificate on first completion, then endorsements for each subsequent year, the idea being to really drive home the notion that these reset each January 1st.
That is a good idea. Gives a hunter or activator or a SWL something to shoot for.
You know, it might just be a Hunter / SWL awardā¦I truly donāt think that Activated All States is possible in a calendar yearā¦
If thereās an āactivated all statesā award that requires doing it in one calendar year, some crazy ass yahoo will go for it.
That crazy ass yahoo might be me. When my kids were pre-teen, we did summer long motorhome trips for four years straight. We visited all 48 contiguous US states, Alaska, and every Canadian province except Newfoundland. Such a great experience. I can easily see a reprise, hitting every state just long enough to do an activation there.
I would keep the award in. Whatās the harm if no one goes for it?
Done! I know some folks who have done it.
The way things are shaking out, the All States awards remain open until you get it, and then it resets and you get an endorsement for each year you re-earn it.
My first thought was motorcyclist hams. The Iron Butt Association defines a 48-10 and hundreds of riders have gone to 48 states within 10 days. Iām not saying 10 days is good for ham radio, but many motorcyclists travel far at a slower pace just for the fun of it. The 4-corners ride is slower and more popular and can easily be made into a 48-state ride. And Alaska is a popular destination.
On small single-cylinder bikes, Iāve gone to AK plus more than half of all states, all of Canada except Neuf and Lab, and a handful of states in Mexico. All 48 has not yet been a goal. I still plan Neuf and Lab on a twin.
Sounds like RVers would do the same.
The other POTAā¢* allows use of DC as a state and keeps the count at 50. I have their WAS without Hawaii. Thatās hunting but it puts activating 50 āstatesā in reach of far more people.
