Lewis and Clark State Park (US-2765)

This isn’t my first activation of this park, and it most certainly won’t be my last. Has many things to do for fin abd with the family: boat launch, fish cleaning stations, horseshoes, and a great hiking path.

Wind was tough yesterday, yet my Pora spike and the Mad-Dog coil still kept upright…well, just slightly. Had my laptop almost shut on me a few times with a few heavy gusts. But hey, it’s North Dakota.

Was there to test some radios and try to figure out hand-tuning my vertical with the coil. My Kenwood TS-440 and Alinco DX-70 couldn’t get any wattage out, but the old Yaesu was able to push 80watts over 20m. Still trying to figure out the coil, but I do wounder if both radios are having issues. I also really need to breakdown and get an antenna analyzer.

It also has many interpretive spots chronicling the stop Lewis and Clark did along their path up the Missouri River. One such event to note was when a crew member hunting for elk with bad eyesight shot Meriweather Lewis in the thigh. It was miracle he didn’t die.

I want to take more photos and walk the trail to do a mule-pack, but overall, its a great park to POTA.

Also, @w7pfb, we did a park-to-park.

(Picture of the deer in snow was back in December[?] with temps at -9).

First photo is the setup I was using on my end. Antenna was a 1/4λ vertical with 4 radials on the ground. That photo was actually taken at the end of the activation where we had our P2P. I was running 50W on my end. The KXPA100 will happily do 100W all day long but at 100W I’m burning more battery to no useful effect, and at 50W if someone can hear me generally I can hear them.

Second and third photos are of the same exact location but a previous day. I’m slowly grinding out a Kilo at that park.
