I was over at the Snake Den a few days ago, we had a nice 40ºF day, though it was a touch windy. The first lot on Brown Ave was full, with cars parked along the road (on a Tuesday!) but the next lot up, about half a mile, had spots and it put me on the northwest corner of the park.
I hiked along the Green trail, and not more than a quarter mile in ran into some very cool granite quarries. The granite intrusion had been quarried for quite a long time, there was evidence of techniques ranging from simple plug-and-feather all the way up to bore holes for black powder. The granite is really nice, stark white with a really high quartz content, and just lovely biotite inclusions. I’m surprised that it isn’t still being quarried.
Not a great shot of the quarry or the granite, I’ll have to go back for some better survey pics.
I wasn’t expecting the granite, typically in Snake Den you are looking at uplifted schist, especially in the center of the park, some of it quite spectacular – it is a really popular climbing spot. You can read about some of that bit of the park in my earlier review.
